Facing the Past exhibition catalogue to be launched at the Judges’ Lodgings
We are pleased to invite you to the launch of the Facing the Past exhibition catalogue on Tuesday 18 July 2023 at the Judges’ Lodgings Museum in Lancaster. The exhibition, which opened in March and runs until November, features new commissioned portraits of six Black Lancastrians by Kendal-based artist Lela Harris, which are informed by historical research including family stories, church and other public records.
This launch event begins at 2:15pm with talks by five speakers on artistic depictions of Haitian women revolutionaries; work at Les Anneaux de la Mémoire in Nantes, France; the overlooked legacies of the Lancaster slave trade and Morecambe’s Black entertainers; the Facing the Past digital trail and archive; and one of the essays from the exhibition catalogue, entitled ‘Fingerprints in the House Museum’. This will be followed by a tour of the exhibits and a panel discussion by artists, and then the catalogue launch and reception at 5:15pm.
Professor Alan Rice, who edited the catalogue and co-directs the Institute for Black Atlantic Research at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), said: “Lela’s exhibition has been attracting diverse new audiences to the Judges’ Lodgings and we are very proud to have created a catalogue that will enable visitors to access a beautifully produced record of their visit”.
The Facing the Past exhibition was made possible by grants from the Art Fund, the Association of Independent Museums and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and the exhibition catalogue and launch event have been funded by the Research Centre for Migration, Diaspora and Exile at UCLan.
To attend the launch event, please register via Eventbrite.
