Gillows of Lancaster

A new gallery at Judges’ Lodgings, Lancaster explores the story of famous cabinetmaker Gillows of Lancaster and London. From humble beginnings making cabinets and coffins in Lancaster, the company grew to work at the height of British furniture design.

Experience a fresh vision of their work and the people involved, from the Gillow family and customers, to enslaved Africans in the Caribbean, young apprentices and generations of skilled makers in Lancaster.

The new gallery aims to further knowledge of the history, design, production, distribution and use of Gillows’ furniture. Highlights on display include the Lady’s Workbox, Lady’s Worktable, Worswick clock, Richard Gillow’s personal book collection and Gillows’ first trade card.

The project has been supported by the Regional Furniture Society and Art Fund.
